Blog Tour: DEV1AT3 by Jay Kristoff

Lemon Fresh has seen better days.40177770._UY2550_SS2550_

After the climactic battle in Babel, she finds herself separated from Ezekiel and Cricket in the wastelands. Lemon’s abilities to manipulate electricity mark her as a deviate, and deadly corporate operatives are hunting her to use as a weapon in the war between BioMaas Incorporated and Daedelus Technologies. Instead, Lemon finds herself falling in with a group of fellow deviates—a band of teenagers with astonishing abilities, led by an enigmatic figure known as the Major, who may hold the secrets to Lemon’s past.

Meanwhile, Cricket finds himself in possession of the puritanical Brotherhood, a religious cult set for a head-on collision with the Major and his band. Searching for Lemon, Ezekiel finds a strange ally in an old enemy, and uncovers a plot that may see him reunited with his beloved Ana.

And inside Babel, a remade Eve hatches a plan to bring an end to the world.

Disclaimer: This review is not sponsored. I was part of the Philippine Blog Tour for this book and I was given an e-ARC of the book by the publisher in exchange an honest opinion.

Deceiving, engrossing and action-packed — three words I would use to describe Jay Kristoff’s second book in the LIFEL1K3 trilogy.

Now, before I start talking about DEV1AT3, I want to bring you guys back to where this story started. I want to build enough backbone on why I gave this review to this book. Let’s talk about LIFEL1K3 first.

In all honesty, was about to give LIFEL1K3 a 3-star rating. Now, don’t hate on me yet because there’s more to the story. The first half of the book was really slow for me, and I was expecting it to be pure action. That’s why I felt that way. But things really do take you by surprise because the second half of the book was EVERYTHING!

It only took me an hour to finish the book after the pace picked up, and I can’t even put the book down. That’s how good it was! The story posed a lot of questions, and I’ve built up solid theories along the way only for Kristoff to break it all down to rubble. Reading it was a rush, and I couldn’t get enough of it!

I ended up giving the first book a solid 4- star review. Why 4 stars though? It’s because the cliffhanger gave me a lot of questions. I swear this book answers your one question, only to give you more questions after.

Okay, I’ll try to keep this as spoiler-free as possible, but I can’t promise I won’t let something slip. If you haven’t read the first book (or don’t care about getting spoiled), you can switch to my spoiler-free review on my BookTube channel below.

You’ve been warned!

DEV1AT3 immediately picks up where LIFEL1K3 left off and the timeline happens days after the end of the first book, so I suggest reading the second book right away. The book is divided into 3 POVs — Lemon, Ezekiel and Cricket’s, each having an adventure of their own after they’ve been separated at one point.

Lemon Fresh meets a band of Deviates who will introduce her to The Major while being hunted by an organization that we met in the first book, Ezekiel meets an unexpected ally while going on a mission to stop his brothers and sisters from gaining supremacy, while Cricket meets someone who is an important part of the story while discovering a whole new purpose.

We are also introduced to a whole new perspective of Deviates. I honestly thought all Deviates have the same power (flicking a switch off all things that run with electricity). Well it turns out I was wrong. They are so much more!

Can we also talk about the LIES in this book? I can’t believe I fell in the same trap every single time I believe in something. Maybe it’s about Kristoff’s frighteningly masterful work of deceiving his readers. Even his cliffhangers make you hooked! I can’t wait to know what happens in the next book. Because until now, every time I think of that cliffhanger, I am holding my breath. I. AM. IMPRESSED.

Overall, DEV1AT3 by Jay Kristoff definitely made it to one of my favorite reads of 2019. It’s like Mad Max meets The X-Men. I’d be lying if I’ll say I won’t continue with the series, because it’s so good you can’t even put it down once you start it (for me, it was on the first half of LIFEL1K3). If you enjoyed the first book, I’m sure the second one will be a roller coaster ride for you.
